"Second best," he corrects with a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes, "'s no way I'm ever gonna top Remus at anything."

But he can love his little brother with everything he has, and hope that it's enough.

"No," Regulus says, firm. "You're always first and best. Nothing can ever change that."

It's clear he means it. He really, truly does. "I'll never let you get away with saying you're not. Remember, we've had a lot of practice at this." And it's true.

He shakes his head slightly, but he manages a smile, regardless.

"Thanks, Reggie," he replies appreciatively, "'m gonna-- Need to process this, mm?"

And maybe to drink away his sorrows.

"Love you. And I'm happy for you. Honest."
